Nothing on set works without C-stands, so we rent them six at a time. Each Matthews 40-inch stand comes complete with a grip head and arm — flag duty, floppy duty, boom-a-light-over-the-couch duty. The mix includes sliding-leg stands for stairs and uneven ground plus turtle-base stands, where the removable base lets you rig a fixture inches off the floor.

Six covers a typical interview or small narrative day: two flags on the key, a floppy for negative fill, a stand for the backlight, and spares — because there are never spares for long. Knuckles to the right so gravity tightens the grip, and bag every stand; our sandbag package quotes alongside this kit for a reason. The set that holds everything else up.
